There is no second chance for a first impression – this also applies to your next homework or term paper. The first impression is given here by the obligatory cover sheet. But what does it have on such a cover sheet? And how free are you in the design? We have researched for you and compiled the most important information!
Please note: This text and the templates for download are primarily for orientation. Depending on the university or subject area, there may be certain specifications for your cover page that can vary widely. If in doubt, it is always advisable to ask the supervisor or look at the pages of your faculty!
Contents: What must be put on the cover sheet?
What information your professor demands on a homework and which does not necessarily have to be done is not uniformly regulated. In the following, however, we have listed all the information that should be made in case of doubt on a cover page for term papers or seminar papers:
- Name of the university, faculty and / or department
- Name of the seminar, if applicable, number of the seminar and winter or summer semester with year
- Name of the lecturer with title
- Title of the homework
- If applicable, date of issue and processing period
- Name, address, telephone number, e-mail address and student number of the author
- Course of study and semester number
Unless otherwise required, the layout of the elements on the cover page is usually free to the author. In general, however, it is customary to divide the cover sheet into three sections, with the upper third containing the information about the university, event and semester, the middle third of the title of the seminar or homework and the lower third the details of the author. The information in the middle third are usually centered.
What should not be on the cover page of your homework?
Unlike a cover sheet for an application, a cover sheet for a term paper is primarily about the clear presentation of information and not on to prove his creativity or to stage. The cover sheet should therefore be well-structured, not too crowded and clean and properly formatted. You should not experiment with exotic fonts and it is recommended that you do not use more than two different fonts. For example, one of the two fonts can be used for the title of the work to visually distinguish it from the other information. In principle, you can select standard fonts for your cover page (as well as for your term paper altogether), such as Arial and / or Times New Roman.
Also with the formatting you should restrain yourself and refrain from excessive use of boldness, italicization, underlining etc. Even if it seems tempting to pimp up the dry fabric of a scientific work with images and graphics, you should do without picture elements and bright colors as much as possible. An exception is, for example, the logo of the respective university, which may appear on the cover page and with which you can give your homework or seminar work an official and serious character. But you have to pay attention to the quality and resolution of the graphics, because a pixelated logo is always worse than not using a logo.
Page number of the homework: Is the cover sheet counted?
The page count can vary and should best be adapted to the formal conditions of the particular college. Occasionally, the cover page is counted but not numbered. In this case, the numbering usually begins with the table of contents with the number “2”. Occasionally no cover sheet or table of contents is counted – in this case, the numbering of the term paper starts with “1” on the first page of the body text.
Important: The cover sheet must be suitable for homework!
To make your work a little easier, we have pre-fabricated some cover sheets for you to do the homework, which you can download for free and where you can orient yourself. However, you should not forget that the layout of the cover sheet should fit seamlessly into the homework in terms of layout and the uniformity is maintained. This applies to creative elements as well as used fonts.
We keep our fingers crossed and wish you “toi toi toi” for your next homework!

Basically, all the above points also apply to the cover page of a home or term paper in the school. Of course, you should also ask your teacher what he wants, because often the ideas vary depending on the teacher.
